It seems tedious to trot out the Trivial Pursuits-type information that Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Rueben Lifshitz in the southern New York City borough of The Bronx to Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants in 1939, but it is central to the success that saw his company valued at $4.3bn (£2.1bn), in 2007. Like many new Americans before him he embraced the dream and made it look even better. They have two sons and a daughter, Dylan, who runs Dylan's Candy Bar in New York. For his 40th anniversary in 2007 he had a party in New York's Central Park - attended by Kennedys and Bushs as well as Hollywood grandees including Dustin Hoffman and Sarah Jessica Parker.
