It is housed in a simple, glass vial with a white, dropper top. It is clear, and odorless. It looks simple, but powerful. What is it? It’s a new skincare sensation from Iceland from Sif Cosmetics, called Bio Effect EFG Serum. Apparently, it has been flying off the shelves in Iceland and other parts of Europe. Now, it’s available in the USA as well. So what is it that makes this serum such a miracle? For starters, it’s a high tech product that contains an Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) with natural attributes, made from barley seeds (they act like mini-factories for the production of human-like EGF cellular activators). EGF is a cellular activator — a substance that occurs naturally in human skin that helps its natural rejuvenation. It is good for most skin types, even those with sensitive skin or acne. The barley apparently is an eco-friendly, natural host for growing DNA as it happens and because it’s a plant-based system, contaminants like e coli are apparently avoided, which can be an issue with animal-based production. This also allows for the production of stable EGF which won’t break down, so remains effective as you use your product to the last drops. You need only use it once a day, at night, and it will help firm skin, even skin tone, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and improve the texture and look of your complexion. The serum has just nine ingredients: glycerine, Aqua, Calcium Chloride, Sodium Hyalunorate, Tromethamine, Hordeum Vulgare Seed Extract, Alcohol (Ethanol) (less than 0.9%), Sodium Chloride, EGF (Transgenic Barley sh-Oligopeptide-1). Without getting too technical, although there are serums and other products that use growth factors from botanicals, apparently the way they are produced using traditional bacterial or animal cell production systems, the human body cannot effectively recognize some of these. Plants benefits from what they produce, but humans are obviously, not the same as plants. However, the Bio Effect EGF can be recognized and used to benefit the human body. Sif Cosmetics is the world’s first and only company to provide the cosmetic industry with a selection of human-like growth factors produced in plants … bypassing the use of traditional bacterial or animal cell production systems.

The idea that you can use just one product instead of many (E.g eye cream, moisturizer, night moisturizer and a serum), is very exciting. If it works, even though the product costs over $200, it might actually be economical as well as a time saver, because just a few drops of Bio Effect Serum (used daily, at night), with no other skincare products, could be a true boon to busy women and men.
we saw all sorts of before and after photos, some of which looked pretty miraculous, but when it comes to skincare, a product can promise the moon, but it’s hard to quantify whether or not it’s working well. At the launch, editors were invited to get a VISIA facial scan (by Canfield imaging systems). We were given a month’s supply of the product, and invited to re-scan our faces after four weeks. While I couldn’t normally agree to use any product that long, I was so intrigued with this one, that I agreed to a four week trial. Like anything else, what works for one, might not work for another. Beauty reviews are still highly subjective. But I’ll try it and let you know what I think, because if you are going to plunk down two hundred clams for a 0.5 fl. oz vial of clear serum, you want to know that it might just work.
While the trial is proceeding, I’ll use just the Bio Effect Serum and daily SPF (the product doesn’t give you any UVA/UVB protection). You can use it under your SPF sunblock and/or foundation. Meanwhile, I can tell you that the serum is easy to dispense from the dropper tip, and feels luxurious and silky on my skin.
First Night report: The box is a cheerful, mint green and white stripe that makes it look friendly. Inside, the entire vial is just 0.5 fl. oz. The box states that it is hypoallergenic without preservatives or colorants and no animal testing. I apply three drops (2-4 is recommended so I split the difference) and wonder how long the product will really last, although it supposedly can last 2-3 months. If I start running out I’ll likely just cut out a drop. I like the way the serum feels. It absorbs quickly, leaving little to no residue behind. When I awoke, no miracles had occurred, and my face felt just a bit “tacky” but also very moist. It is going to be strange not adding a moisturizer, but it doesn’t appear that my skin is drying for a drink of moisture, anyway.
So far so good for the Bio Effect Serum. final report: As the weeks passed, I did feel that my skin was softer and smoother, but then I began to break out. I have sensitive skin, and it could just be that using anything day and night for weeks would be too much. It could have also been partly due to stress during, and exhaustion after, Fashion Week. It could also be the change of seasons. I gave my skin a break for a few days and started up using the serum again, but alas, continued to break out. broke out again. Finally, I just gave up. It is very difficult for someone who reviews skincare on a weekly basis to give up everything and use just one thing for weeks, or forever. I was waiting for a skin scan to see if my skin had improvement that might be invisible to the naked eye, but the scan never got scheduled. So what can I say about Bio Effect EFG Serum? Should I be disappointed? Not really. Like everything else I write about, if something is right for your skin, you use it correctly, and regularly, and keep your expectations reasonable, you can get a positive result. But what works for one person, regardless of high tech ingredients or price, may just not be right for someone else. Bio Effect EFG Serum seems to be a product with a lot of potential, and although it clearly was a disappointment for me, that doesn’t mean it is a bad or ineffective product. It is undeniably a pricey one,but if it works magic on your skin, it is priceless!
